Medication Assisted Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder - The Therapists's Role

  1. Overview of FDA-approved for opioid use disorder (MOUD)
  2. Research supporting each of the medications
  3. Addressing stigma and misconceptions about MOUD
  4. Supporting clients in medication adherence and recovery

Learning Objectives

  • By the end of the session, participants will be able to accurately describe the differences between buprenorphine, methadone, and naltrexone treatments for opioid use disorder.
  • Participants will be able to identify at least one client characteristic that would make them a potential candidate for each medication.
  • Participants will be able to explain why medication assisted treatment with methadone or buprenorphine is not just addiction to another substance (i.e. contrary to this stigma).

Ned Presnall, MSW, LCSW

Ned Presnall is a licensed clinical social worker, researcher, and educator. Ned has taught courses on addiction treatment for the Brown School of Social Work, Missouri Institute for Mental Health, MO Department of Mental Health, MO Primary Care Association, Institute for Research, Training, and Education in Addictions, and the American Society of Addiction Medicine.

Ned and his colleagues at Plan Your Recovery in St. Louis provide comprehensive care to persons with addiction and other mental health problems, including individual, couples, and family therapy and psychiatry.
