Learning Objectives

  • Participants will be able to summarize at least one key finding in the research on moderation as a goal in SUD treatment.
  • Participants will understand the 12-step’s movement’s philosophy on moderation and its rationale for focusing on abstinence.
  • Participants will be able describe client characteristics which make moderation an appropriate or inappropriate goal for therapy.
  • Participants will be able to identify two key principles in developing a moderation plan.

Ned Presnall, MSW, LCSW

Ned Presnall is a licensed clinical social worker, researcher, and educator. Ned has taught courses on addiction treatment for the Brown School of Social Work, Missouri Institute for Mental Health, MO Department of Mental Health, MO Primary Care Association, Institute for Research, Training, and Education in Addictions, and the American Society of Addiction Medicine.

Ned and his colleagues at Plan Your Recovery in St. Louis provide comprehensive care to persons with addiction and other mental health problems, including individual, couples, and family therapy and psychiatry.
