Narratives of Recovery - Is 12-step the only way?

  1. Typology of recovery narratives: the AA story, the growth story, the co-dependence story, the love story, and the mastery story.
  2. AA, Smart Recovery, Dharma Recovery, and other mutual support programs
  3. Shame and the abstinence violation effect
  4. Breaking the cycle of chronic relapse

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will be able to describe at least two different recovery narratives that clients might use to understand addiction and recovery.
  • Participants will be able to compare and contrast the approaches of AA, SMART Recovery, Dharma Recovery, and recovery without any mutual support.
  • Participants will be able to identify at least two factors that contribute to chronic relapse and a corresponding therapeutic strategy to address it.

Ned Presnall, MSW, LCSW

Ned Presnall is a licensed clinical social worker, researcher, and educator. Ned has taught courses on addiction treatment for the Brown School of Social Work, Missouri Institute for Mental Health, MO Department of Mental Health, MO Primary Care Association, Institute for Research, Training, and Education in Addictions, and the American Society of Addiction Medicine.
