Encountering Substance Use Disorders in Private Practice

This course has been approved for Continuing Education credit by the Missouri Committee for Social Work. Certificates will be provided. Check with your licensing body to see if the course qualifies for your continuing education.

Topics:

  1. Negotiating the client's presenting problem: SUD vs. co-occurring mental health problems
  2. Safety considerations: withdrawal and the role of medical detoxification
  3. Screening and evaluation tools

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will be able to describe the role of the CAGE and the ASI in the screening and evaluation of addictive disorders.
  • Participants will be able to explain at least one common reason that clients with SUDs seek help for an alternative mental health problem.
  • Participants will be able to describe the role of ambulatory and inpatient detoxification in SUD treatment
  • Participants will be able to provide clients with psychoeducation about the pros and cons of abstinence and moderation as goals for treatment.

Ned Presnall, MSW, LCSW

Ned Presnall is a licensed clinical social worker, researcher, and educator. Ned has taught courses on addiction treatment for the Brown School of Social Work, Missouri Institute for Mental Health, MO Department of Mental Health, MO Primary Care Association, Institute for Research, Training, and Education in Addictions, and the American Society of Addiction Medicine.
