When SUDs Disrupt College - Treating the Young Adult

  1. A family-focused approach for young adults who have returned home due to SUDs
  2. Friends, identity, and addiction. Helping young adults develop a healthy social identity.
  3. Addressing co-occurring mental health problems in young adults with SUDs.
  4. When and whether to return to college: Helping parents set boundaries with their college-age children.

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will be able to outline a family-focused treatment approach for young adults who have returned home due to SUDs.
  • Participants will be able to help parents conceptualize the range of choices they have in boundary setting with young adults, from the most rigid to the most permissive, and help them choose their preferred approach with its associated risks and benefits.
  • Participants will be able to describe the potential role of SUDs in young adult social identity and at least one strategy for helping them develop a healthy social identity after a period of addiction.

Ned Presnall, MSW, LCSW

Ned Presnall is a licensed clinical social worker, researcher, and educator. Ned has taught courses on addiction treatment for the Brown School of Social Work, Missouri Institute for Mental Health, MO Department of Mental Health, MO Primary Care Association, Institute for Research, Training, and Education in Addictions, and the American Society of Addiction Medicine.

Ned and his colleagues at Plan Your Recovery in St. Louis provide comprehensive care to persons with addiction and other mental health problems, including individual, couples, and family therapy and psychiatry.
