Patients with addiction often feel more motivated to address co-occurring mental health problems than addiction. Focusing on the co-occurring problem feels less intimidating, and patients sometimes think the addiction will resolve itself if they can just get their anxiety or depression under control. Unfortunately, addiction typically requires its own attention and can play a significant role in exacerbating mental health problems, making them less responsive to treatment. We can often help you help your client by providing consultation, evaluation, and treatment of an addiction even as you continue your work with them on co-occurring problems and conditions.
