What is the difference between a psychiatrist and a therapist?

Psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners specialize in diagnosis and medication management. Therapists provide talk-based treatment — CBT, motivational interviewing, and other evidence-based approaches to changing how you think, feel, and behave. Many people benefit from both, and our practice provides them under one roof, which allows for coordination that isn't possible when providers don't communicate.

What does a psychiatric evaluation involve?

Your first appointment is a comprehensive conversation — typically 45–60 minutes — covering your mental health history, current symptoms, medications, family history, and goals. We'll discuss whether medication is appropriate and what options make sense for your situation. You don't need a referral. If you're already working with one of our therapists, your care can be coordinated from the start.

What insurance do you accept for psychiatric appointments?

Accepted Answer

Angela Jones, PMHNP is in-network with UnitedHealthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Cigna. John Gransbach, DNP is out-of-network; many plans provide out-of-network mental health benefits that allow for partial reimbursement. We recommend calling your insurance to verify your mental health benefits before your first appointment. We can provide documentation to support out-of-network reimbursement.

How quickly can I be seen for buprenorphine treatment?

Accepted Answer

Typically within 1–3 days. Opioid use disorder is a medical emergency — the risk of overdose is real and present, not theoretical. We don't believe anyone should wait weeks to access treatment that can be lifesaving. Call us directly if you need to be seen quickly.

Can I get an ADHD evaluation and medication management?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We evaluate and treat ADHD in adults and adolescents. A psychiatric evaluation takes approximately 45–60 minutes and covers symptoms, history, and the differential diagnosis. If ADHD is diagnosed and medication is appropriate, we can begin management from that appointment. We also coordinate with our therapists for the behavioral and executive function components of ADHD treatment.

Do you prescribe stimulant medications for ADHD?

Accepted Answer

Yes, when clinically appropriate. We prescribe stimulant medications — amphetamine salts, methylphenidate — for diagnosed ADHD, as well as non-stimulant alternatives such as Strattera and Qelbree. Non-stimulants may be preferable when there are concerns about substance use history, cardiovascular factors, or patient preference. Controlled substance prescriptions are monitored carefully at each follow-up.

What is buprenorphine (Suboxone)?

Buprenorphine is an FDA-approved medication that reduces opioid cravings and withdrawal symptoms. It is one of the most evidence-supported treatments for opioid use disorder, dramatically reducing overdose risk and improving long-term outcomes. It is not 'replacing one addiction with another' — that's a stigma-driven myth that has contributed to preventable deaths. People stabilized on buprenorphine have lower rates of overdose, better employment, and better family outcomes than those who go untreated.

Do you prescribe medication for mental health conditions other than addiction?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We evaluate and prescribe for depression, anxiety disorders, ADHD, bipolar disorder, PTSD, OCD, and other psychiatric conditions — either independently or coordinated with therapy from our counseling team. We don't push medication; we explain the evidence and respect your decision.

Question 9

Is telehealth available for psychiatry appointments?

Accepted Answer

Yes, throughout Missouri. Most appointments with Angela Jones, PMHNP are virtual by default. In-person appointments are available at our Saint Louis office on Clayton Road. Telehealth is as effective as in-person for medication management and is often more convenient for routine follow-ups.

What does outpatient alcohol detox involve?

Accepted Answer

Outpatient alcohol detoxification uses medication — typically a tapering benzodiazepine — to safely manage withdrawal symptoms without hospitalization. You'll be seen regularly during the acute withdrawal period (the first several days) and monitored closely. Not everyone is a candidate; we assess whether outpatient detox is safe for your situation. If a higher level of care is needed, we'll help coordinate it.
